The last No HumDrum Mitten Swap was so amazing, I’m doing it again. Woo hoo! yay! Plus, knitting outrageous mittens for other people is right up my alley. I’m thinking of hand-spinning this time. I’m totally all about hand spinning. I might not do super involved color-work though. I have an idea in my head for a slightly Latvian inspired cuff, with handspun, Navajo plied yarn (Think Noro stripes, here.) for the main body of the hand. Perhaps with a fair isle or intarsia motif at the back of the hand.
But before I get ahead of myself, here is my Questionnaire:
How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? I’ve been knitting since I was a girl. My mom taught me. However, I’ve only been seriously knitting for the past 6 years.
Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced? I’m right there in intermediate. A happy medium.
What are your favorite colors? Any you dislike? I like all colors. Really, I do. My current favorites include light to medium pink combined with a warm chocolate brown or charcoal/black. I lean more towards saturated colors on the whole, and I also like monochromatic colorways. (As in multiple tones of all green, or pink, etc.) You can feel free to go crazy with colors if that sort of thing appeals to you!
Do you like Latvian type patterns? If so, what are your favorite patterns? I sure do! Here are some I love:
You’re not bound to these colors or patterns. These are just ideas to help you see things that appeal to me. If it’s too overwhelming just stop looking and pick something you’d like!
Patterns I love:
Color Combos I love
Do you desire mittens for yourself, your “special someone else” or your child? Me! My kids grow too fast.
What is the measurement from your wrist to the tip of your longest finger? 7 3/4 inches, from my wrist crease to my longest finger.
What is the circumference of your hand at it’s widest point? Edit: I went temporarily insane and have no idea where I came up with the original measurement. The widest part of my hand (across the pad of my hand, just below fingers) is 6 1/4″. The actual widest part of my hand (at my bottom thumb joint) is 7″. Just thought I’d update that, since my original measurement was an INCH too large. Ahem.
What other things do you enjoy knitting? Socks, I’m a crazy sock knitter. I also love spinning
What sort of needles do you enjoy working with? I nearly always work with circular needles, and I’m pretty much an Options only kind of girl. I do have their Harmony needles as well. I’ve been Jonseing for their Harmony cable needles, but don’t have them yet.
What’s one project you’ve not yet tried but are dying to make? I don’t know. I’m kind of in a “Must knit socks!” phase right now.
What’s one yarn you’ve not yet tried but are dying to work with? This is going to sound crazy, but I’ve been wanting to do a project with my own EB yarn dyed. I’ve swatched the natural yarn here, but haven’t worked with it yet. Besides that, I crave indie dyed sock yarns, and noro sock yarn. Trekking, too. Oh, and Bearfoot, and ArtYarns. (I’m pretty sure that’s more than one.)
What other hobbies do you have? Do you spin? Sew? Garden? Cook? I spin, dye yarn, cook, bake, and brew.
Besides yarn, do you collect anything? Nope. Although I think I’m going to have to start a dangly earring collection.
What kind of goodies do you enjoy? Sweets? Salty? Anything you hate or are allergic to? I’m a firm believer in dessert and coffee being the two major, and most important food groups. I love imported milk chocolate!
Do you have any kids? Pets? I have three kids, twin 3 1/2 year old girls and a two year old son. No pets, unless kids count.
What is your favorite part of Winter? Snow in December
What is your least favorite part of Winter? The extremely cold temps and grey days we have from January through the end of February. Ugh! Freaking winter! I’m totally a spring, summer and fall kind of girl.
